SYNOPSIS

Alain Tanner's masterpiece, a sensitive, literate and engaging comedy follows eight individuals affected by the political events of 1968 : a man regretting May 68, a Tantrism infatuated secretary, a typographer, a gardener, a teacher and a supermarket cashier (Miou-Miou) with no qualms about liberating groceries. They all refuse capitalism, dull routine, obligations and monotonous everyday life to live as we all should do : happy and oblivious of individualism and obligations. Tanner describes the film as "a dramatic tragi-comedy in political science-fiction".

REVIEWS

"Tanner combines Godard's intellectual responsibility with Renoir's faith in the resiliency of the human spirit, resulting in a film that is both enlightening and encouraging. Funny, moving, and instructive, Jonas is that rare thing : a political film that speaks to the heart as well as the mind. Recommended."
Chicago Reader (Dave Kehr)

"Compassionate, funny, and provocative (...) The film perfectly encapsulates the dilemma of an aging idealistic generation as they continue to struggle to exist in their imperfect, contemporary reality."
