SYNOPSISA married engineer who's running for parliament in Switzerland becomes obsessed by a waitress whom he glimpses at a railroad café. He pursues her, they revel in their sexual affinities, he loses the election (but doesn't care), he wants to marry her, and she leaves him.
The movie takes a profound, tough subtle, stand against treating women as objects. It tackles (through a love story) the divides between rich and poor (particularly the weathly North and the immigrant South) and between men and women.
Festivals
"By portraying inequality so quietly, the theme has all the more impact, and the film goes on echoing in your mind well after you have seen it."
The New York Times (Vincent Canby)
"Tanner's most achieved film to date is also his most apparently conventional, the story of a love affair."
